Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, had sinned grievously against his family and had fled the country. Genesis 28 tells of God visiting him in a dream.
When night came he was alone in a wilderness with only a stone for a pillow. He fell asleep and had a dream. In this dream God spoke this to him: "I am the Lord, the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring."
When Jacob awoke he set the rock he had used as a pillow as a monument, poured oil on it and called that place Bethel, or the place where God dwells, the House of God.
"Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will watch over me on the journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
This story of Jacob and his vow to honor the God who would guide him and protect him is an example to us today. God has given us the promise of provision and protection (Matthew 6:25-32). He has promised to care and provide for us like like he does the birds of the air, and he only asks one thing of us.
"The pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough troubles of its own" - Mathew 6:32-34
