A Prayer of Job - Release from unrelenting pain

4/14/2015

Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope for, that God would be willing to crush me, to let loose his hand and cut me off! Then I would still have this consolation - my joy in unrelenting pain - that I had not denied the words of the Holy One. - Job 6:8-10

This is a heart breaking prayer. Job is so miserable that he just wants to die. His prayer is that God would finish the job and just crush him. I have never been the victim of chronic pain, but I have known those who were and that kind of constant, unrelenting pain causes a person to seek death rather than to go on suffering.

However, Job wasn't just wanting to end his suffering. He wanted to end his life before he became unable to resist being bitter toward God and denying him. At the heart of his prayer was his devotion to God and his Word.

When our devotion is to God and not to ourselves then God can reveal himself.

Prayer: Lord, help me to not give in to any temptation, especially the temptation to accuse you or to deny the truth of your word. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Job Prays: the Lord gives and the lord takes away

Job 1:20-22 - Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:  "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised."

Job was in the middle of the greatest trial of his life. In one day's time he lost his sons and daughters, his enemy stole his livestock and killed his servants, fire destroyed his sheep and servants, and finally finally his camels were stolen and those servants put to the sword.

In the morning he was among the greatest men in the region, by afternoon all that he had accomplished in his life was destroyed.

Filled with loss and grief he cries out, "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." Job was a true man of faith.

I don't have nearly as much to lose as Job, but my prayer is that should I lose it all I would be able to trust God and realize that it is all in his hands.

Prayer: Lord, I may not have a lot, but what I do have has been a blessing from you. Help me to always be thankful and to realize that all I have is only on loan from you and you can call it back at any time. Grant me the grace that whatever happens in life I can say "The Lord be praised." Amen.

A Devotional on Prayer

4/8/2015

People have been telling me how the devotional on prayer has been helping them to carry out their commitment to the Take A Knee In Prayer 30 Day Challenge.

Every day this devotional has another message on prayer and a short prayer to help us get through the day.

Here is the devotion on prayer for today:

Always Pray and Don’t Give Up

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He Said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘grant me justice against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused, but finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming.’”

And the Lord said, “listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” – Luke 18:1-8

There are so many good thoughts and questions in this passage that it is hard to focus on just one. But we will just focus on the purpose for which Jesus told this parable: We should always pray and not give up.

Have you noticed how often Jesus speaks of effective praying in terms of persistent praying? In Matthew 7 he says, “Ask… Seek… Knock," which indicates persistence. In Luke 11 he tells of a neighbor who persistently knocks and calls out to his friend to open the door and give him food for a traveler. Then there is this example of this widow woman who was persistent in her plea.

I don’t know the why, but I do know the how. Why do we need to passionately and persistently pray for something that is important to us? I don’t know, but I do know that Jesus spent a lot of time teaching us to pray in that way. I also know it works. In my own life there have been many times when I cried out to God with great passion over many days, and even months, then the answer came in a glorious way.

Jesus ends this parable with the question: When the Son of Man comes will he find faith? In this parable and the question, Jesus was calling believers to passionate, persistent praying.

Prayer: Lord, Grant me a gift of faith and the heart to be persistently praying. In Jesus name. Amen.
